Ernst Rüdin: Hitler’s Racial Hygiene Mastermind. [REVIEW]Jay Joseph & Norbert A. Wetzel - 2013 - Journal of the History of Biology 46 (1):1-30.
Ernst Rüdin was the founder of psychiatric genetics and was also a founder of the German racial hygiene movement. Throughout his long career he played a major role in promoting eugenic ideas and policies in Germany, including helping formulate the 1933 Nazi eugenic sterilization law and other governmental policies directed against the alleged carriers of genetic defects. In the 1940s Rüdin supported the killing of children and mental patients under a Nazi program euphemistically called “Euthanasia.” The authors document these crimes (...)

  19. A Graveyard for the Midwest: Sherwood Anderson, Soren Kierkegaard, and the Sacred in Midwestern Literature.Thomas A. Wetzel - 2000 - Dissertation, The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee
The dissertation explores the philosophical, literary, and stylistic similarities between the twentieth century American writer Sherwood Anderson and the nineteenth century Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. These similarities suggest that the Ohio writer's work and aesthetic were deeply influenced by the Danish thinker, and the connection between them lies in the immigrant rural religious communities of the American Middle West. Ultimately, these interrelations reveal a "religious-aesthetic" unique to the entire range of Midwestern literature of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, and they (...)

This paper explores the relevance of the debate about ethical expertise for the practice of clinical ethics. We present definitions, explain three theories of ethical expertise, and identify arguments that have been brought up to either support the concept of ethical expertise or call it into question. Finally, we discuss four theses: the debate is relevant for the practice of clinical ethics in that it (1) improves and specifies clinical ethicists' perception of their expertise; (2) contributes to improving the perception (...)

  25. Ethical Expertise Revisited: Reply to Giles Scofield.Norbert L. Steinkamp, Bert Gordijn & Henk A. J. M. ten Have - 2008 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 18 (4):385-392.
This reply to Giles Scofield's critique of the authors' article in the June 2008 issue of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal highlights two main topics. First, contrary to what Scofield suggests, using the terms "ethics" and "morality" interchangeably constitutes an oversimplification that blurs important distinctions. Second, in a representative democracy, ethical expertise and consultation need not generate a "tragic choice" of the kind Scofield has in mind.

Bekannte Vertreter der italienischen, japanischen, russischen und deutschen Kantforschung kommen zu Wort. The objective of this article is to analyse and compare four methods of ethical case deliberation. These include Clinical Pragmatism, The Nijmegen Method of ethical case deliberation, Hermeneutic dialogue, and Socratic dialogue. The origin of each method will be briefly sketched. Furthermore, the methods as well as the related protocols will be presented. Each method will then be evaluated against the background of those situations in which it is being used. Can theodicy be avoided? The claim of unredeemed evil: James Wetzel.James Wetzel - 1989 - Religious Studies 25 (1):1-13.
Theodicy begins with the recognition that the world is not obviously under the care of a loving God with limitless power and wisdom. If it were, why would the world be burdened with its considerable amount and variety of evil? Theodicists are those who attempt to answer this question by suggesting a possible rationale for the appearance of evil in a theocentric universe. In the past theodicists have taken up the cause of theodicy in the service of piety, so that (...)

    A Meditation on Hell: Lessons from Dante.James Wetzel - 2002 - Modern Theology 18 (3):375-394.
This essay borrows Dante's inspiration in the Inferno to explore a theology of hell. The usual apologies for hell either bank on a retributive paradigm of justice or are content to have hell introduce a note of tragedy into the history of redemption. The theology that is culled from Dante, and especially from his handling of Virgil's place and authority in hell, is neither retributive in its justice nor tragic in its vision. Dante shows us how to make some sense (...)

The collected works of Norbert Elias.Norbert Elias - 2006 - Dublin: University College Dublin Press.
Elias wrote in both English and German, and in all his work runs to 14 books and around 90 other essays, along with poems and numerous interviews. The 18 volumes of the collected works contain many writings not previously published in English, and a small number never published before. All of the texts have thoroughly checked and revised, by editors who have a deep knowledge of Elia's thinking; they have inserted many clarifications, cross-references and explanatory notes.

  42. On the Symbiosis of Science and Religion: A Jewish Perspective.Norbert M. Samuelson - 2000 - Zygon 35 (1):83-97.
Three theses are explored, the first two historical and the third philosophical‐theological: (1) throughout most of the history ofWestern civilization, science and religion have been closely connected with each other, and each has benefited from the connection; (2) the belief that science and religion have always been in conflict is not based on the actual history of either set of institutions; and (3) structurally a relationship between the two institutions is in the interest of both. By religion here I mean (...)

    Splendid Vices and Secular Virtues: Variations on Milbank's Augustine.James Wetzel - 2004 - Journal of Religious Ethics 32 (2):271 - 300.
John Milbank's case against secular reason draws much of its authority and force from Augustine's critique of pagan virtue. "Theology and Social Theory" could be characterized, without too much insult to either Augustine or Milbank, as a postmodern "City of God". Modern preoccupations with secular virtues, marketplace values, and sociological bottom-lines are likened there to classically pagan preoccupations with the virtues of self-conquest and conquest over others. Against both modern and antique "ontological violence" (where 'to be' is 'to be antagonistic'), (...)

This article presents a sequent calculus for a negative free logic with identity, called N . The main theorem (in part 1) is the admissibility of the Cut-rule. The second part of this essay is devoted to proofs of soundness, compactness and completeness of N relative to a standard semantics for negative free logic.

Entdeckungsgeschichte der Polyfluorethylene: Zufall oder Ergebnis gezielter Forschung?Walter Wetzel - 2005 - NTM Zeitschrift für Geschichte der Wissenschaften, Technik und Medizin 13 (2):79-91.
For a long time Polytetrafluoroethylene has been considered an accidental discovery made at DuPont in 1938. Less well known is the fact that Hoechst already in the early 1930s did research in the field of fluoroethylenes, already preparing both Polytetrafluoroethylene and Polychlorotrifluoroethylene and recognizing their extraordinary qualities. At DuPont, however, Polytetrafluoroethylen was discovered by chance in 1938 during experiments to produce refrigerants, without its unusual properties being perceived. Here the reasons are outlined why Hoechst for two decades was not allowed to (...)

The program so conceived has two prongs: (i) unifying the disparate modules by demonstrating that they are generated by the same basic operations and respect the same general conditions and (ii) assessing which of these basic operations and conditions are parochial to the faculty of language (FL) and which are reflect more general features of cognitive (...)
